Obituary for Anna Jean Edna Nichols (Snedden)

NICHOLS, Anna
November 2, 1933 - January 23, 2023

It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of Anna Jean Edna Nichols on Monday, January 23, 2023 at the age of 89 years.

Anna was the only child to Ernie and Lottie Margaret Amell Perrin Snedden of Carleton Place, Ontario. Predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years William Thomas “Bill” Nichols. Beloved mother of Hugh (Kimberly) of Deroche, British Columbia, Blair (Kimberley) of Renfrew, Ontario and Mark (Angela) of Regina, Saskatchewan. Anna will be missed by her precious grandchildren Scott (Susan), Sarah Thomas (Eric) and Julia of Ottawa, Ontario, William (Carmen) of Port Moody and Caitlin of Coquitlam, British Columbia. Anna was thrilled to have two great grandchildren Asher Allan, born to William and Carmen and Abigail Rose born to Sarah and Eric. They joined the Nichols family in July and September last year. Anna Charlotte will be born to Scott and Susan in March 2023.

Anna and Bill moved from Ottawa to Renfrew in 1960. Anna enjoyed a 25-year career (1961-1986) as a school teacher for the Renfrew County Board of Education. During her tenure, Anna taught Special Education, Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten at Central, Victoria and Queen Elizabeth Public Schools. Halloween was always a special time at the Nichols’. 100’s of children Anna taught, then the children of those children, visited the Nichols home on Plaunt Street and Highway 132. After retiring from her teaching career, Anna joined the Social Welfare Department for the Townships of Admaston/Bromley. She could often be seen driving on gravel roads to meet those in need.

Anna also had a positive impact on the community of Renfrew serving as a member of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Auxiliary for over 50 years and a member of the Board of Directors at Renfrew Victoria Hospital for more than 20 years. Anna twice served as the President of the Auxiliary and as the Chairperson of the Board at Renfrew Victoria Hospital in addition to serving as the Vice-Chair of the first fundraising campaign for the RVH Foundation.

There are few things that Anna didn’t do during her lifetime. She enjoyed snowmobiling on weekends with her parents, family, the Elliott, Wilson and Nesbitt families. She and Bill loved to entertain at their cottage on the Mississippi Lake near Carleton Place (1965-1979) and at their homes in Renfrew and Maple Leaf Estates in Port Charlotte, Florida. Anna took up skiing in her early 50’s hitting the slopes at Gray Rocks, Mt. Trembant, Chantecler, Whistler and Calabogie Peaks. Anna enjoyed travelling with Bill and friends, golfing, playing dominos, boating, swimming and spending time at Blair and Kimberley’s cottage at Colton Lake with family and Lake Friends. For over 60 years, Anna valued her Wednesday night bridge games with life-long friends Doreen Elliott, Liz Nesbitt, Margaret Dougherty, Doris Handford, Lorna Finner, Eleanor Donaldson, Barbara Carrier, Eleanor Chown, Betty Steele, Grace Tye, Janet Wooton and Betty Neil.

The Nichols family would like to thank the team at Quail Creek Retirement Residence for the exceptional care that was provided to Anna and Bill over the past year. Special thanks to the incredible medical team led by Dr. Steven Radke at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital that took care of Anna since the beginning of her long and courageous battle with cancer.

Cremation has been entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, 85 Munroe Avenue East, Renfrew. Visitation will take place on Thursday, February 2nd from 2:00-4:00pm & 7:00-9:00pm.
