Obituary for Tom Pezoulas

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Athanasios "Tom" Pezoulas, (86), of Ottawa, Ontario who passed away on October 11, 2023.

Tom fought with strength, dignity, and courage, while battling illness.

Tom is survived by Katerina (nee Doukouris), his wife of 56 years, his sons Dino (Manon), Chris (Shelly) and George (Leah). He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Thomas, Karina, Ethan (Kayla), Adam, Andreus (Taylor), Nikos, Zoe and his great grandson Maverick, his sister Bessy along with many nephews, nieces (Gina, Penny and Tony), Godchildren and friends.

Tom was born in the small village of Tripotamo, Greece, on December 9, 1936, to Konstadinos and Georgia Pezoulas. At the tender age of 18 and with just a few dollars in his pocket he courageously travelled across the Atlantic to Canada, attempting to make a new life for himself and his family. Unable to speak a word of English, Tom got a job as a dishwasher the day after he arrived and worked tirelessly to send money home and prepare for his family’s arrival.

After many years learning the restaurant business at the Del Mar Restaurant, Tom became the owner of the Del Rio Restaurant in 1960, where he humbly served the best pizza and lasagna in Ottawa and taught his incredible work ethic to his children. Tom sold the restaurant in 1989 and moved on to a career leading a group of caretakers at the courthouse in Ottawa.

Tom retired in 1997, but the restaurant business was in his blood. He enjoyed volunteering his time at his son George’s restaurant and catering business; he would routinely shuttle food to Eganville from Ottawa and cook at larger events.

Tom was deeply devoted to his family and rarely was he seen without the love of his life, Katerina by his side. Many happy family vacations were spent in Cape Cod and later in his retirement in Florida. He also greatly enjoyed his time with his grandchildren. There were many trips to the movies, mini putt and go cart track with Papou. Always putting the needs of others ahead of his own right to the very end, he created countless good memories to remember him by.

Although a great many people will remember Tom as the owner of the Del Rio Restaurant, he will be remembered for his humility, selfless generosity and devotion to his family and friends. His endless generosity to strangers included free meals, money, an understanding ear and never a string attached.

The door at his home was always open to family and friends and included large parties, friendly card games and gatherings where Tom always cooked the best steaks, roast beef, turkey or ham, often all of them in one sitting.

Professional arrangements entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Eganville. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023 from 10:00-11:00 am at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church (1315 Prince of Wales Drive), with funeral to follow at 11:00 am. Interment at Pinecrest Cemetery. Immediately following the interment, friends and family will gather for a makaria reception to celebrate Tom’s life at the Hellenic Event Centre beside the Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, would be appreciated. Tributes, condolences and donations may be made online at
