Obituary for Hugh Michael Stevens

Hugh “Mike” Stevens at the St. Francis Memorial Hospital, Barry’s Bay, on Saturday 13 Nov 2021 at the age of 82. Beloved husband of 62 years to Diane (nee Ewing); loving father to Michael and Heather; grandfather to Taylor, Wallis, Connor and Kyle; and great-grandfather to Liam. Predeceased by his parents Hugh and Josephine (nee Gosselin), sister Frances Vanderloos, and brothers John, Allan and Terrence. He leaves behind to mourn him brother-in-law Albert Vanderloos and his children; mother-in-law Peggy and Diane’s six siblings (Steven, Robert, Paul, Gary, Arlene, and Keith) and their children.
Hugh was born in Swan River, MB on 11 Aug 1939. He joined the Canadian Army in 1958 and initially served in the Royal Canadian Regiment before rising through the ranks as a weapons technician in the Land Ordnance Engineering branch. In recognition of an exemplary career, he was appointed in 1984 as a member of the Order of Military Merit (MMM). He left military service in 1987, spending his retirement split between his home near Killaloe and escaping Ontario winters in Florida.
Due to pandemic concerns, a funeral will not be held. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Hugh may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
