Obituary for Dr. John Wallace "Wally" Fletcher

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Dr. John Wallace “Wally” Fletcher, who passed away in Renfrew on March 22, 2022.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila (nee Simpson) of 64 years. Father of Valerie (Jim), Steven and Kirk (Sue). Grandfather of Billy, Kaitie, Christopher, Tyler and Sean. Great grandfather of Lily, EJ, Parker, Gemma and Cameron John. Brother of William and Arthur, son of John and Verol (nee Fox).

Wally was born on the family farm in Tillsonburg, Ontario on September 14, 1931.

He was a dedicated scholar having graduated from Ryerson Polytechnic, the University of Waterloo and the University of Alberta with a PhD in Radiation Chemistry.

A notable 33-year career was established at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in Chalk River. His research and published papers were presented at numerous international conferences.

Wally will be remembered outside of his professional life for his many community endeavors; a few of which included, the Deep River Community Planning Board, Canadian Ski Patrol, Upper Ottawa Valley Ski Zone program coordinator, designer and builder of the original “Wally’s Hutt” (complete with electronic timing system) at the top of Calabogie Peaks. For the last many years Wally dedicated his time to the Greater Madawaska Committee of Adjustment. He also took great pleasure in building, fixing, mowing, plumbing and wiring anything that needed it.

Professional arrangements entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Renfrew where the Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, April 4, 2022 at 11:00am.
